Huiping Cao joined New Mexico State University in 2010 as a professor in the Department of Computer Science. Her research is focused on data mining, applied machine learning and data engineering.
Cao’s job includes teaching, conducting research, advising students, and contributing to the university and academic community through various service activities.
“I take immense pride in the accomplishments of the students I have guided through their academic journeys,” Cao said. “Having successfully graduated four Ph.D. candidates. I fostered close working relationships with each, nurturing their growth and witnessing their achievements firsthand.”
Cao dreamed of being a scientist since she was in elementary school in the Shandong Province, China.
“As I gained a deeper understanding of the world, I honed my career goals to engage in research and education," she said. "NMSU offers me an opportunity to do what I desire to do for my career life. The Department of Computer Science, which has undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs, values both research and teaching.”
After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Hong Kong in 2007, Cao completed a post-doctoral position at Arizona State University before coming to NMSU. She is the first professor chosen to receive the Hue and Pat McCoy Endowed Professorship in the Department of Computer Science.
“I find great fulfillment in the academic freedom afforded to us to pursue scientific inquiry,” Cao said. “I deeply cherish the connections I've forged with my students. Over the years, I have provided direct research guidance to numerous students and imparted knowledge to hundreds of students. The heartfelt emails I receive from former students, expressing gratitude for my support, long after their graduation, serve as invaluable reminders of the impact I have made.”
